Recently, I was scrolling through Instagram stories when this popped up:
I immediately paused to consider this familiar moment when, as an observer, the next right thing is so obvious – even though the poor protagonist might not know or see it.
I imagined seeing myself in that moment. I was outside walking – yes, walking AND scrolling. Without a moment’s thought, I knew what I would be screaming at the screen telling myself.
PUT DOWN THE PHONE.
PUT DOWN THE PHONE!
Needless to say, I put my phone back in my pocket and contemplated this message for the rest of the walk.
That night at dinner, I told my spouse M.J. about this experience. In a study they had read about kindergarten readiness, children didn’t have the fine motor skills to turn the pages of a book. Some even tried to swipe across the paper. A colleague had shared that she saw a group of teens at a restaurant for a birthday celebration; every one of them was looking at their phone.
The news is relentless.
The fracturing is intentional.
We cannot be truly present in our lives, much less powerful creators and change-makers, when we struggle to focus beyond tiny increments.
Isn’t it time to
GET YOUR BRAIN BACK?
“Social media platforms, such as TikTok or Instagram, use algorithms that condition our brains to crave quick bursts of content — shortening our attention span and making it easier for us to watch an hour’s worth of reels than to sit through a one-hour lecture. ”
Is Your Brain Broken?
Absolutely not.
But if your attention has been hijacked by the addictive quality of scrolling, this special group is designed to help you find your focus again, one hour at a time.
How will it work?
Find Your Focus will incorporate the individual support of 1:1 coaching and the irreplaceable power of gathering in community. There are two components to this journey:
Before and After Coaching Sessions
Before and after the four weeks, you’ll meet with Jena for a 30-minute 1:1 coaching session. This is a judgment-free zone where you’ll get to show up with whatever is real and alive for you.
Our “before” session will focus on:
where you are now and what you’d most like to accomplish
what projects or ideas are waiting for your undivided time attention
Our “after” session will be an opportunity to:
reflect on what worked and what didn’t
lock in your learning
explore how to maintain your momentum going forward
Four Weekly Co-Working Sessions
On Wednesdays, the FYF cohort will gather on Zoom for 50 minutes of uninterrupted time. Expect to feel encouraged and motivated showing up for yourself and your fellow focus finders!
We’ll take five minutes at the beginning and end to name your focus for the day and do a brief closing check-in.
You might choose to read (a book, one or more of the open tabs on your browser…) or write (a newsletter, blog post, or chapter).
Sign up if you…
could use some caring support and accountability for finding your focus again
feel frustration or shame around how much you scroll or jump around
know you thrive with some structure and accountability
love (and maybe miss) the feeling that comes from focusing on one thing at a time
want to be gentle with yourself by taking “baby steps” in this direction
have writing and reading that keeps getting interrupted or pushed aside
