I May Never {a poem}

I May Never | A Poem by Jena Schwartz

I may never
walk a red carpet,
meet the Queen,
win a MacArthur
or eat shark meat.

But I will prep
your coffee
every night before bed,
my tiny offering,
and reason enough
for being.

I may never
publish a bestseller,
testify before the Supreme Court,
or travel on horseback
in the outback.

But I will sit with you
in the mornings,
and listen
to each new paragraph
as you write
your life.

I may never
win a billiards tournament,
or learn to say
I love you
in every language.

But I will make my life
into a love song
and send it
like a kiss
in your direction.
All you have to do
is receive it.

Refrain inspired by Gail Warner’s poem, What If I Never? from Weaving Myself Awake: Voicing the Sacred Through Poetry
