Call It Love

Half-waking in the night
undetermined hour
rain or ice on the skylight
you reach over
and pull her in closer
this moment of safety
everything you
ever needed

Morning light
barely reaching
the insides
of the room
you turn to see
she is still there

Later, walking
so carefully
over icy surfaces
music in your ears
filling your heart
violins and lyrics
that make you ache
in the best way
the sound of rain returns
your jacket wet
face flushed
alive
and glad for every
moment
even the hardest ones

You gave up
on expecting
things to make sense
knew at some point
this would not be
a puzzle
you would ever complete

So you learn
to hold it all
bodies that are home
and how the days
unfold
one after the next
a continous scroll
of doing your best
and trusting
what the darkness
will hold

The rain
or ice
on the skylight
bed beckons
but you go out
into the day
tethered
by something
intangible
call it faith
or simply
call it love
